Quantum Computing Breaks Through the Hype Barrier

Recent breakthroughs suggest practical quantum computers are closer than skeptics thought.

Quantum computing has been "five years away" for about twenty years. But something genuinely different is happening now.

In the past eighteen months, multiple teams — at Google, IBM, and several well-funded startups — have demonstrated quantum processors that can solve problems classical computers simply cannot. Not theoretical problems. Real ones. IBM's 1,000-qubit Condor processor and Google's continued improvements on their Sycamore architecture have pushed error rates low enough that fault-tolerant quantum computing is starting to look like an engineering challenge rather than a physics one.

The implications are staggering. Quantum computers will break much of the encryption that currently secures the internet. They will simulate molecular interactions so precisely that drug discovery timelines collapse from decades to months. They will optimize supply chains, financial models, and climate predictions at scales currently unimaginable.

Governments are not waiting. The US, China, and the EU have collectively committed over \$50 billion to quantum research. The race is on — and the finish line is closer than most people realize.
